Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has apologized for his comments about Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. In a statement, Dr Opoku Prempeh popularly known as NAPO explained that his comments were his personal opinion and were not intended to disrespect Kwame Nkrumah or any former president.

The apology comes days after he claimed at his unveiling in Kumasi that no President in Ghana’s history including former President Nkrumah had performed better than President Akufo-Addo. His comments generated massive backlash from the public with some demanding an apology and a retraction.

However, in a statement, the NPP running mate apologized for his comments. “I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state; including my grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor,” he stated. “I note the concerns raised after my statement, I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” he said.

Expect More Developments Under My Presidency - Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has highlighted his significant contributions to developing the northern part of the country, particularly Chereponi. During a meeting with the chiefs and elders of Chereponi, Dr. Bawumia questioned former President John Mahama’s track record, asserting that despite his tenure as president, Mahama did not initiate any notable projects in Chereponi. In contrast, Bawumia underscored his accomplishments as vice president, saying he has made a notable impact through various development initiatives. Speaking during a meeting with the chiefs and elders of Chereponi, Dr Bawumia said John Mahama has nothing new to offer.

“My main opponent in this election, former president John Dramani Mahama, was president before. I have not been president before. I am vice president, but John Mahama cannot point to one project in Chereponi. “I can point to many projects as vice president in Chereponi and so if as vice president, I have been able to start many things in Chereponi, as president, I will be able to finish many things in Chereponi.”

Mahama is avoiding a debate because I will reveal how empty his policies are - Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, of running away from a possible debate because he is afraid his “empty policies will be exposed.” Bawumia said he is looking forward to a debate with the NDC’s flagbearer despite him [Mahama] saying he doesn’t want to debate.

Addressing party supporters during the second phase of his nationwide campaign at Nalerigu on Wednesday, July 11, Bawumia accused Mahama and NDC communicators of struggling to explain the party’s proposed 24-hour economy. He added that he will continue to sell the NPP’s policies to Ghanaians, whether Mahama agrees to a debate or not.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Dramani Mahama on the economy and governance but I am afraid he is running away from a debate and his people say he doesn’t want to debate. He says he doesn’t want to debate because he knows that I will expose the emptiness of his policies. “He says he has a 24-hour economy policy that he cannot explain, it is as empty as an empty barrel. None of his people can explain it and they say they will be exporting lions and elephants.

“When we meet man-to-man, we can debate and the country will see where our policies lie and that is where we should go, give the country an opportunity to listen to us, but if he chooses not to debate, I will continue to sell my policies to the people of Ghana and you will take the decision.”
